Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a serious condition characterized by the accumulation of plaque in the arteries of the legs, which diminishes blood flow to the lower legs and feet. This reduced blood flow makes it difficult for muscles and nerves to receive the oxygen required for proper function. If not addressed, PAD can lead to several serious complications including neuropathy, coronary artery disease, and amputation.

Symptoms of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

Pain in the hips, thighs or calves while walking

Chronic leg cramps or muscle fatigue

Leg numbness, tingling, or decreased strength

Wounds or ulcers on the feet or legs that don’t heal

Skin that is shiny, smooth and cold to the touch in the affected area

Traditional treatments such as medication, physical therapy or change in lifestyle aren’t helping

A Non-Surgical Approach to Peripheral Artery Disease

Exploring Endovascular Therapies

Endovascular intervention is a category of minimally invasive procedures used to unblock arteries and restore blood flow to the legs and feet. During these procedures, a small puncture is made in the groin area, and a flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into the artery. The physician guides the catheter to the affected region using x-ray guidance.  Different catheters may be used to perform various treatments including balloon dilation of the blocked artery, atherectomy to remove the plaque, and, sometimes, deployment of a metal stent to keep the artery open.
