Hand Osteoarthritis

Hand osteoarthritis (OA) can cause several symptoms that may suggest the need for treatment like hand embolization. Common signs include pain at the base of the thumb, especially when gripping or doing tasks that require fine motor skills; swelling and stiffness in the hand or thumb, particularly in the morning or after activity; and difficulty moving the fingers or thumb, making it hard to grasp or handle objects. You may also feel a grinding or clicking sensation in the joints or notice visible bumps or deformities at the joints of your fingers or thumbs.

What is Hand Embolization?

Hand embolization is a minimally invasive interventional radiology procedure performed under local anesthesia to treat osteoarthritis in the hand. Procedure typically takes 15-20 minutes and works to reduce pain and swelling in the fingers. During the procedure, a tiny needle is inserted into the artery of the wrist. Embolic crystals will be infused into the hand to normalize blood flow to the inflamed joints, thus reducing inflammation and pain.
